More information on TWAIN compatibility
TWAIN is a complex, poorly understood, and weakly enforced standard. Brand and device selection are important. The following remarks are an overview of the more popular vendors and their TWAIN support.
- Avision: Please avoid. Nice hardware, poor TWAIN support.
- Brother: Great prices, hundreds of models, poor TWAIN support. Recommended only when: (1) low cost is essential (2) speed is relatively unimportant and (3) you don't mind using the scanner's UI for scanning.
- Canon: We recommend all Canon desktop (DR-series) and departmental scanners.
- DCT: Their small-footprint DocketPort scanners usually have good TWAIN drivers, and the company is responsive to TWAIN developer feedback. It looks like the Ambir scanners are rebranded DocketPorts.
- Epson: We've had good experience with Epson flatbeds, their TWAIN drivers seem to be solid and attentive to the TWAIN standard.
- Fujitsu: Fujitsu fi-series has good TWAIN support.
- HP: Produces a bewildering number of devices and drivers, no two alike, and it seems that each one has a different TWAIN problem. If you use any but the most basic TWAIN features, be prepared to test each HP model and sometimes each driver version. Please especially avoid the HP ScanJet 5590 and 8270.
- Kodak: Some models have peculiarities in TWAIN implementation that can cause issues with Identifi. Proceed with caution - needs to be tested first and some models may ultimately not be practical to use.
- Panasonic: We have relatively little experience with these scanners, but several customers have been very happy with various KVx models.
- Syscan: Has changed its name to DCT, and replaced the TravelScan and ScanShell models with DocketPort models.
- Umax: Poor software quality control, and notoriously unresponsive to TWAIN developers. We recommend avoiding Umax.
- PlusTech: Awful TWAIN support. Avoid.
- Visioneer: We remain skeptical of their combination flatbed+ADF models, but recommend their pure ADF units such as the Patriot 480, Strobe XP 450 and similar models.
-
Xerox: Drivers can have memory errors when scanning into Identifi due to incompatible use of TWAIN. Zerox scanners are not supported.
Long Document Mode
For Canon scanners the control panel setting should be set to “ON1” for Long Document Mode with the page sizes you plan on using. Canon discourages color and very high-quality settings together with Long Document Mode. They also recommend against using “auto page orientation” while in Long Document Mode.
Tablet Support
The Identifi.eSign Desktop client has the ability to sign on most Windows-based tablet devices. iOS (Safari) and Android (Chrome) operating systems are not currently supported by desktop eSign for signing.
Identifi OLE (Online eSign) supports the ability to sign with Chrome, Edge and Safari on both PCs and mobile devices. IE is not supported with OLE.
Notes:
- MS Surface Pro tablets are no longer supported.
- MS Surface BOOK tablets are no longer supported.
- MS Surface RT tablets are no longer supported.
- All touch screen PCs are not supported for E-Ink signing.
